Happy National Coffee Day!

wolframalpha:

It’s supposedly National Coffee Day! To celebrate, we will drink a few extra cups and then use Wolfram|Alpha to see how much coffee the United States consumes each year.

As a country, the United States consumes the most coffee in the world. When you break it down to per capita consumption, we rank 42nd. First place goes to Luxembourg.

Excuse us while we go help increase our world ranking.

for me it’s every day

5 Mathematical Mortalities  → matheminutes.blogspot.com

There’s no escaping the fact that mathematicians, as a collective, are often viewed as rather eccentric by the great unconverted. This stereotype is only exacerbated when one takes a brief glimpse at the bizarre manners in which some of their lives have ended; there is no shortage of daft demises in the history of mathematics.

A Golden Pair of Identities in the Theory of Numbers.  → arxiv.org

arxiv-math:

Authors: Robert P. Schneider

We find an interesting relationship between the golden ratio, the Moebius function, the Euler totient function and the natural logarithm — central players in the theory of numbers. The theorem and corollaries highlight a connection between the golden ratio and the factorization of integers that is not obvious; and display a sort of inverse relationship between the Moebius function and Euler totient function.

  • Q: What is the point of Doctor Who?
  • Douglas: The whole point of Doctor Who is that, if you take the second letter of each of the fifty-ninth words of all the episodes over the last twenty years of broadcast and run them together backwards, the original location of the lost city of Atlantis is revealed. I hope this answers your question.
